(The first person is his thoughts)
Ken opened his eyes to the morning sun coming in through the blinds. Blinking a few more times he stretched before standing up and walking to the bathroom. After using the facilities he made his way to the kitchen to fix breakfast.
“Hmmm.” He hummed as he looked in the fridge. Which one should I use? Swedi doesn’t like turkey bacon and Sprite doesn’t like sausage. Man, I need to use those corn tortillas. He closed the fridge and looked in the pantry. I could make biscuits and gravy but I don’t have time to make biscuits. Egg scramble it is then.
Swiftly, he cut up vegetables and dumped them in the pan. As Kendal warmed the tortillas, little paws sounded, signifying the arrival of his twins.
“Smells good dad.”
“Thanks Swedi. Would you two set the table?”
“Of course.” She answered, already holding the plates. “You know, Sprite and I were wondering if we could maybe go with you today.” Sprite nodded.
“Guys, I already told you. When you’re older. Just One more year then you can come, okay?” The two deflated before giving nods.
He felt guilt creep up as he looked at them. They are almost old enough. And I could keep an eye on them. What’s the worst they could do? As he made their plates scenario after scenario popped up. They could cause an avalanche. Sprite could cause a forest fire. They could run off when he wasn’t looking and get lost. No, it was much safer for them here. Besides, the whole point of the trip was to surprise them with a pet or some sort of trinket. He can’t surprise them if they come.
After he finished eating he checked his bag to make sure he didn’t forget anything. Spare clothes in case he falls in a river or lake. Food for meals and snacks. Yup he’s good to go.
“Dad?”
“Yeah? He said as he turned his head.
“We wanted you to have these. My pocket knife,” Where did she get a pocket knife? “And Sprite’s flare.” Where did she get a flare?!
“Thank you guys.” He put them in his bag and closed it before turning to face them. “Okay, now I want you to be safe. What do you do if someone breaks in. Sprite began signing.
Stab them, burn the body, and scatter the ashes so they can’t be found.
“No cremation. You can stab to protect yourselves but don’t burn the body. You call for help and protect each other. Understand?” They nodded as he pulled them into a hug. “Okay, don’t burn the house down while I’m gone.” He hugged them tighter. “I’m serious. Okay, I’m off.” He pulled away and opened the door. “One more.” He gave them another squeeze. “Okay, now I’m off.”
They waved goodbye as he shut the door. I’m gonna miss them. They better not burn the house down. With a deep breath he marched down the path, ready for an adventure at Snowpeak mountain.
